If you’re looking for a glamping spot that ticks all of the boxes, then we can highly recommend Rockfield Glamping. It’s located in Monmouth, and you are literally nested amongst the rolling hills but with all of the mod cons! We have visited three times in the last year, each time taking over the whole site alongside our friends (there are four bell tents available) and it works so well.
Your Bell Tent & Horse Box Ensuite (private bathroom!)
The bell tents are great. They can sleep up to five people, the price you pay is for the bell tent so for us as a family it’s affordable. You get a double bed, two singles and a smaller fold out bed if you need one. Your accommodation will be set up according to the number of people staying in it.
The bonus is that there is electric! There’s a bedside table with a kettle and cups and two plug sockets. Fabulous for charging up the phones. We do try and embrace the outdoors, and don’t bring along tablets/games for the kids but staying connected is helpful when you’re in the middle of nowhere.
At the end of the bed is a chest full of all of the essentials you need – plates, cups, corkscrew, cooking utensils and a washing up bowl. There’s also a log burner too. We’ve always stayed in the summer months and been luck to have fine weather so haven’t used it but would definitely do so if it was a bit nippy!
Outside of the tent you have two reclining chairs, under the canopy of the bell tent, along with a picnic table, umbrella and you own BBQ.
But for me, the best thing is the private bathroom adjacent to the tent. It is brilliant. A proper toilet, sink and bath with a shower. Plus, you can take the side down and enjoy a soak in the tub whilst enjoying the views and a glass of bubbly! Such a novelty.
Your pitch is far enough away from the others that you could easily stay as a family without knowing anybody. You have good privacy, but for us being able to come along with three other families was ideal. If you want to do this I recommend booking early as the dates go quickly!
Communal Areas
There is a communal kitchen area. Each bell tent is allocated it’s own fridge so you don’t have to get in a muddle with other peoples things – and there’s a spare one for overflow. There’s a cooker with oven and hob and a indoor dining area. So if the weather isn’t on your side there is the facility to cook indoors.
You’ll also find a covered seating area with cushioned rattan furniture, tables and picnic benches along with a huge fire pit that has four cooking areas too. I love a fire while enjoying the outdoors, the size of the fire pit makes it extra special too – especially when there’s plenty of space to toast those marshmallows.
Things to do on-site for the kids
There is plenty to do on site for the kids. An oversized swing attached to the tree has always been a firm favorite, as well as the zip wire. They’re next to each other and our kids spent hours together here. If you have football loving kids then they’ll be pleased with the football pitch, that can also be a volleyball or badminton court too. There’s a box of outdoor games for all to use.
We took the kids bikes too and they loved the freedom to cycle around the site. There are pathways to each bell tent and to common areas so they didn’t have to navigate the long grass. It’s fully enclosed too, so they get a sense of freedom whilst being in eye shot.
This year, because of the heat wave we took a paddling pool and pitched it at the communal area (because we knew everyone). There’s an outside water supply with hose which made filling it super easy and it gave that little extra for us all to enjoy.
One year we even took a dart board! It’s a place where you can make as much or as little of it as you want.
Things to do for adults
RELAX!! We spend so much time chasing the kids around, making sure they’re ok, preventing them from disrupting others (being too loud, invading peoples space etc etc) that it’s nice to go away where you can take a step back and enjoy the surroundings. It’s so peaceful; we just ate, drank and had a laugh. You’re there for such a short amount of time (we stayed two nights) that it was enough for us to enjoy it and that is partly what keeps us coming back. A step back from the hustle and bustle of life, but with those little luxuries to make it a comfortable stay!
